The War On Christmas

Some of you may be wondering what the “War on Christmas” is. Well, this is a topic that has been receiving a tremendous amount of discussion at least over the past couple years in the USA. In America, there is a certain segment of society that has become extremely hostile towards anything that resembles public expression of Christian beliefs.

This anti-Christian segment has succeeded in creating enough pressure to cause many local governments to discontinue putting up their usual Christmas decorations for fear of being sued in court by those few who don’t like Christmas decorations.

While listening to the radio, I heard a news report regarding how elementary school children were being restricted from singing “Silent Night, Holy Night”. Due, no doubt, to the objection of some anti-Christmas adult, the children were forced to sing “Silent Night, Wintery Night” instead.

While watching television I saw another report of a school in a part of the USA known as the “Bible Belt;” the school in an effort to restrict students from having a Christmas party, instituted rules such as, only all white plates could be used at parties being planned near the Christmas season. I understand that this was to keep people from bringing plates with the colors traditionally associated with the celebration of Christmas (e.g. red and green).

I guess that maybe we should not be surprised at the present antagonism against Christ and the celebration meant to honor his birth as this hate against Christ started at least two thousand years ago when the wicked King Herod attempted to murder the young Christ child after learning of his birth from “wise men from the east” who had come to Israel bringing gifts to celebrate Christ’s birth (see Matthew 2:1).

What I find so extremely ironic are the retail stores that refuse to acknowledge Christmas while at the same time making millions of dollars by luring Christmas supporters into their stores to purchase gifts that everyone knows will be given in celebration of Christmas.

These stores will do things such as put sparkling decorations with banners that say stuff like “Happy Season” in their stores and hold Winter Season Sales to encourage people to buy gifts for their loved ones, and at the same time forbid their store clerks from saying “Merry Christmas” to customers.

Now, let me say that I am by no means advocating that the United States of America (or any other country) create laws that force merchants to celebrate Christmas. However, I do find much logic in the position many are taking in refusing to do their Christmas shopping at stores who try to entice shoppers into their store to purchase what are obviously Christmas items, while at the same time trying to dissect Christ out of Christmas.

Finally, it seems to me, in a country that considers itself a “Christian Nation,” whose legal fabric is based much on principles extracted from the Bible, that merchants should not be afraid of a radical and unreasonable minority who want to eliminate public celebrations of Christ’s birth during Christmas time.

As someone once said: Christmas without Christ is nothing but a “mas” ( pronounced Mess).
