We must cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the
flesh and spirit... II Corinthians 7:1
Lying
LYING UNDER
OATH
What the [former] president has confessed to doing is of serious
concern. We should sincerely pray for the president and the country,
for great damage has been done to the office of the presidency and
the nation.
However, the focus here is not just another recounting of the
shameful details of sexual activity and charges of perjury. What has
me concerned at this moment is the apparent attitude of
self-righteousness of individuals who admit that they have
repeatedly cheated on their spouse; Yet, these same persons proclaim
that they are better/more righteous than the president because he
lied under oath and they didn’t.
Well, let me provide you with some food for thought. There is no
other more serous and binding legal oath one can take than when
standing before a minister or magistrate as one pledges to love and
be true & faithful to the person they are marrying. And, in most of
the weddings that I have attended, the oath is “until death do you
part.” Now, to those who have cheated on their spouse, even made a
practice of keeping a lover on the side, you too have “lied under
oath.” The oath that you spoke before God and witnesses.
Well, you say I did not lie under oath because I had no intention of
cheating on my spouse as I stood before the minister or magistrate
during the marriage ceremony. OK, I don’t want to argue the
definition of the word “lie” (or the definition of “is”). So, let me
stipulate that you did not lie when you stood before the minister or
magistrate; However, you still committed fraud if you entered into
an intimate relationship that violated the sacred and binding legal
oath you made to your spouse.
What is the solution?
All who have not repented of their sins must ask God to forgive
them. Ask Jesus to become the Lord of your life. Forsake that sin of
adultery and forsake all other sins as well. Stay away from
situations which tend to lead you into wrong. Finally, ask God to
fill you with his Holy Spirit; With this filling, you will have
power and strength to live free from sin. (Acts 1:8; Romans 6:18)
