Christians In Pornography And Miss USA:
I’m looking in my Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (Tenth
Edition).
Definition Number One, of the word “Pornography,” is precisely as
follows:
1 : the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing)
intended to cause sexual excitement.
And, just to define the word “erotic,” it has to do with things
devoted to, or that tend to arouse sexual desire.
Looking at these two definitions, what you have is that pictures,
books, movies, and any other production involving things that tend
to cause sexual desire can fall under the heading of pornography; or
“Porn” for short.
Two other things I should mention:
Because sexual activity between a man and woman who are legally
married is both legitimate and honorable, this type of activity is
not considered Porn unless they’re depicting their intimate
activities in presentation to others. Unfortunately, there are some
married couples who do things such as take their normal private
sexual acts and make videos of their intimate moments for sale on
the Internet.
Porn is wrong because it promotes the sin of lust.
Matthew 5:28
28 But I say unto you,
That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed
adultery with her already in his heart.
Porn is all about getting someone to dwell on fantasizing about sex,
other than the biblical sex that should occur between you and your
spouse.
This is what the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition was all about
when I was young. It wasn’t that the guys (as I recollect it was
mainly guys reading Sports Illustrated), were so interested in
fashion and apparel. This Sports magazine would put out a special
edition with near naked women in ultra-revealing swimsuits. They
were using lust to draw more customers. And by claiming the women
were wearing swimsuits in a sports magazine, they were allowing some
men to justify looking at a magazine with near-naked female models.
Some men might be too embarrassed if Sports Illustrated outright
opened a Porn division to sell pictures of women totally naked. So,
you end up with the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition which is
really nothing more than a softer more palatable version of porn, as
opposed to the hardcore porn where the models aren’t even wearing
the small, tight, sensuous swimsuit.
So, where are we going with this? Well, the Miss USA pageant, as
with many beauty pageants, has a segment were the contestants prance
around and pose in a swimsuit, where very little of their body is
covered.
The news is all abuzz regarding one Miss USA contestant named Carrie
Prejean, who entered the Miss USA contest as Miss California.
According to the news quotes that I am seeing, Miss California
professes to be a Christian. And, during the competition, when asked
about Gay Marriage, she correctly stated that she felt that marriage
should be between a man and a woman.
However, I take issue with all the Christians clamoring to say what
a great representation of the Christian community this young lady
is. Quite the contrary, I found the news clips of her prancing
around near-naked in the swimsuit portion of the Miss USA pageant to
be Soft Porn as described above.
Let’s just be totally honest; do you really think it’s not a sexual
thing for the near-naked Miss USA pageant contestants to come out in
the public for everyone to look and judge how "hot" their bodies
look? It’s nothing more than Soft Porn and anyone who would profess
Christianity would do better to put their clothes on when they come
out in the public no matter how sexy or cute they look in a bikini.
I’m sorry, but Miss California is simply not a good role model for
young Christian women.
